Chairman’s Newsletter

Dear All

Some of you will know that Tim Casey stepped down from his role as Chair of the club at this year’s AGM. Many thanks to Tim for his efforts over the past 4 years. I put my hat in the ring to replace him and I’m delighted to say the members present approved the appointment. Also new to the Committee is Annabel Williamson as Membership Secretary. Jason, Claire, Alastair and Neil all agreed to stay on the committee and continue in their current positions. Russ will carry on as Bar Manager and Harry Mason has agreed to be our social media champion. Thanks to all of them for giving their time to keep the club up and running. We mustn’t forget others too, such as Chris Cox, John Burbridge and Phil and Cynthia Crane for keeping up the good work. Thanks too to our club sponsors for their continuing support.

I thought everyone would appreciate occasional updates during the year – so here is something to get started:

• Membership renewal activity has been brisk and thank you to all those who have already completed forms and paid their subs. It looks like we will be around the same number of members as last year. If anybody has yet to pay (who intends to renew) please could you reach for your wallets.

• Maintenance is always ongoing, as we know. Jason has managed to get the floorboards to court 1 fixed and all heaters working other than court 2, where we are waiting for parts. The marks to the floor of court 1 need attention, as does the ceiling of court 2, repairs to court walls and outside steps. We would like to sand the floors on all courts and tidy up the court walls. Once we have final membership numbers, we will know how ambitious we can be.

• The Club Finals night is set for Friday 11th, per the note mailed to everybody this week. We are hoping to kick off around 6.00 (to be confirmed). As a reminder, the free pizzas and cheap beer usually available on the first Friday of the month will be moved to 11th. It would be great to get some support along to encourage and applaud all our finalists and markers. Club night will continue as usual without court 1 so hopefully we will have a fun sporting occasion.

• We will run a graded tournament 8th January and details will follow. For now, this is just a note for your diaries. We also plan to run a PSA tournament later in the year.

• One or two members have mentioned the possibility of a Racquetball club night or something similar. If this is of interest, could you let any committee member know please and we will follow up at the next committee meeting.

• Russ held a party at the club in October with entertainment from the Flying Amps. He plans to run a number of events over the coming year and it would be great to see members enjoying these evenings.

• Finally, at the AGM we briefly discussed the Cricket Club’s proposal for redevelopment, which would include the Squash and Rugby clubs. Details are sketchy at present (and those of us with long memories will know this has been an ongoing project over many years, in one guise or another). We are promised involvement so, if anything concrete happens, we’ll let everybody know.

That’s all for now

Steve
